Drove this sleek machine well over 600 miles today with my mother-in-law. Good times, good times!

Electronically governed at 75, cruise control only works up to 70. Understandable limits, but a PITA when you are trying to complete a pass of a big rig and crest the hill at the same time...

That’s a lot of miles in an uncomfortable vehicle with your M-I-L

Yup. Fortunately she’s a gearhead so we have things to talk about. Her first car was an Opel Astra (or insignia?) circa 1960s.

A brick would give you cruise control at 75.

Almost. I tried it and it’s weird. If you leave your foot down, it hits 76, then slows you down to about 72, then releases back to manual control, so it surges back up to 75/76, then down again... very annoying way to go.

That motor did great, plenty of power even for hilly PA!

Our school’s minibuses have the 6.0, and it’s amazing how well they get up and go.

There are few things more annoying than having a ton of power but being electronically nannied well below the limits. Though in the case of a rental van I guess it makes sense.

That’s weird... before I got my governor tuned out, I could just hold the pedal down and it would hold steady. Both vehicles in question are GM products, and as it’s not like GM to develop 2 systems where they can possibly make 1 work, I’d imagine it’s the same programming.

Could be the fact that it’s a cube van though. Ie, the extra drag slowing it faster than is allowed for in the regular van before applying power again.

I think 75 is a reasonable limit for your average idiot in a big rental van. No cruise control would drive m nuts though.

Hmm. I’m not sure. I never just held my foot to the floor outright, just partway down and I noticed a lot of speed fluctuation. I wonder if Penske is doing something different.

It was just a big van with a box on the back - the 12' van box isn’t wider than the van. The next size truck was the 16, that had duallys and a wider box, those definitely have more wind drag. The 12' and 16' were the same price, but I thought we would be able to fit everything in the 12' (and we did), and it would use less gas on the trip. I have to say I was impressed with the fuel economy, going 70 most of the way we got about 12 MPG, I was expecting worse.

It did have the 6 speed trans, but it kept trying to hold 6th too long on the hills and then would drop to 4th to get back up to speed and never shift out of 4th until we crested the hill... I eventually put it in manual mode and put it in 5th at the bottom of each hill and it would not lose speed or drop to 4th for most of them. I really thought GM should be able to program a truck transmission better than that.

It’s all in the name of empeegees. Unfortunately.
